What were the goals of the sixteenth-century explorers of Texas Your first task is to select two topics, or questions, from the Combined Essay Topic List. You must choose one topic from numbers 1-50 and another one from numbers 51-100. These assignments have very strict deadlines which are no later than the date specified on the calendar page. You are not required to tell me which topic you choose but be forewarned that procrastinating until the last minute to begin working on the papers is a very unwise decision. Submitting inadequate work pieced together at the last minute will adversely affect your opportunity for a good grade. I have high expectations for collegiate-level work and grade accordingly. For each short essay you are required to write a paper of no less than 750 words. This is usually about three pages of double-spaced, standard 12 point Times New Roman font with 1″ margins. The title and works cited pages do not count. I will not accept a paper and award a zero for any work that cannot meet the minimum length requirement. If you find that your topic is too simple, or short, please choose another one from the list. There are also minimum source requirements. You must have at least four sources. Two sources must be primary documents. One must be an academic journal. The last source may be an acceptable secondary work of your choice. You cannot use the textbook as a source. For extensive detail on sources please read the Writing a History Essay section of this course. You also cannot use tertiary sources, or encyclopedias such as Britannica, Encarta, or Wikipedia. On-line sources are acceptable as long as they conform to the minimum source requirements. There are many on-line primary documents and sources in the public domain that may be found with a simple Google search. essay must also conform to accepted academic forms and styles. Please follow MLA, Turabian, or Chicago Manual of Style. Most disciplines use MLA but my preference is the Chicago Manual of Style format that uses end notes or footnotes rather than parenthetical citations. I will accept MLA or Turabian yet, in my view, parenthetical citations detract from the text for the reader. Please conform to the rules of whichever style you choose in citing your work as well as on your works cited page.
