Topic: This module/week you have had the opportunity to watch the movie Fireproof in order to better understand the EMC equation (Identified Needs + Intentional Resourcing = Enlarging the Conversation). Through the lens of our course materials, explore the interpersonal communication concepts you identified in the movie. For example, did you find a degenerative communication spiral? What role did self-disclosure play? How was identity revealed?
At the beginning of the movie Fireproof Caleb and Catherine both struggled very badly with their communication skills, especially their interpersonal communication. I believe that Caleb and Catherine’s personal communication had began to fade because neither of them felt heard or understand when speaking to the other (Peterson, 2007). Each of their body languages when the other would speak would be as if they were disinterested in talking and every time led to an argument. As Peterson (2007) stated, “poor communication blocks access to the deeper relationships we want and our friendships remain distant and impersonal” (p. 22). This seemed to be the point that Caleb and Catherine’s relationship got to. Self-disclosure at the beginning of the movie was none existent, which could be one of the reasons their relationship went downhill. Neither would open up to the other and as Stewart (2012) said, “if you cannot reveal yourself, you cannot become close to others, and you cannot be valued by others for who you are” (p.212). By withholding who each other was and how each was feeling Caleb and Catherine’s relationship began to become unraveled and their communication began to spiral downward. There was a degenerative communication spiral that I found in the movie. This was noticeable when Caleb began the challenge his dad has given to him. His wife would take everything good he would try to do the wrong way, which led to further problems within their relationship. Identity was revealed when Caleb began to open up to Catherine and self-disclose after she found out what he was doing. Caleb’s newfound relationship with God is what I believed help his identity be revealed because Catherine was able to see a change in him, a change for the better.
