The 21st Century U.S. Workforce is changing. Once of the major changes is that for the first time in history there are four (4) generations working side-by-side. The four (4) generations are:
The Traditionist/Mature/Veterans (born before 1946)
The Baby Boomers (born between 1946 through 1964 +/-)
Generation X (born 1964 through 1979 +/-) and
Generation Y/Millennium (born 1980 to 2000 +/-)

If you find any interesting articles from an accredited source please share it with your classmates
Unit 4 DB: New Hire/Onboarding Experience
New employment encourages the heart and motivates the spirit to learn and grow…to be part of something bigger and achieve one’s goals and purpose. This is a significant point in each of our lives and the hopes and dreams we have of that new job, for our family and future and our willingess to learn and grow.
Discussion Question: Describe the importance of the new-hire or on-boarding experience (academic data required) and how your organization strives to maximize that newcomer spirit. How were you treated on your first day? Did this first impression make an impact on you? Were you made to feel welcome and receive adequate training? Use material from your textbook in addition to your personal observations
Unit 5 DB: Labor Unions
Let’s discuss Labor Unions. Give a brief summary on the reasons why they were formed in the early 1900s. The National Labor Relations Act (Wagner Act) is one of the early labor laws that allowed unions to form. What were the reasons that the workers united together to get these laws passed?
After you do your research, do you feel unions are still relevant in today’s workplace?
Be specific in your responses – using data from both the textbook and recent news outlets, such as the Wall Street Journal, Businessweek, New York Times, etc. Make sure that your sources have authors – and please don’t use any sources that are for or against unions. Make sure the reporting is objective
Unit 6 DB: Intrinsic or Extrinsic Motivation?

How important is the compensation system in an employees’ productivity? Are there other factors that employers can do to motivate employees? What are your feelings on this subject – intrinsic or extrinsic motivation and if so what is an example?
For the academic portion of your response, please use data from the textbook or from an accredited business journal, magazine, newspaper, etc. You may also want to share an article you find with your classmates. For example, here is an article from The Wall Street Journal on “Ways To Be Happy and Productive At Work” dated November 25, 2012 by Jessica Pryce-Jones.
unit 7 discussn
Paid vacations are one of the most expensive benefits for American employers. Most companies offer paid vacations after a minimum period of service. The theory is that after having an opportunity to rest and refresh themselves, workers will be more effective. Please do a comparison of the typical vacation period in the U.S. (as shown below) and the vacation period for ONEother country such as Australia, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain or a country of your choice. After doing the comparison let us know your feelings on the differences.
The typical vacation in the U.S. private sector is:
- One week for an employee with less than one year’s service
- Two weeks for 1 to 10 years of service
- Three weeks for 10 to 20 years
- Four weeks for over 20-year employees
Please use the internet to research this question and also provide your feelings on the differences between the two countries. Please remember we are talking about the private sector. If you find any interesting articles on the subject please share them.
unit 8 discussion
Your last Discussion Board question is on OSHA, which has make the workplace a much safety place. But as we all know there are still safety problems.
Some people believe that there are few risks associated with working in a non-manufacturing work environment – such as a restaurant, hospital or counseling center.
- What would you tell these people to convince them of the potential safety and health hazards in these work sites? In addition to academic data please relate any personal observations. OR
- Provide a concise definition of OSHA and why it was needed in the workplace? Have you ever experienced an unsafe work environment? Was the situation fixed?
