The intent of this project is to illustrate use of the arts as an instructional strategy in early literacy and learning across the curriculum. The goal of an author study is to make a connection between books and an author’s life. Author studies show children that authors are real people. A well done author study also has the ability to introduce and enhance multiple skills including comparing/contrasting, prediction, linking stories to real life experiences, recognizing themes and lessons, understanding who the characters are, recognizing similarities and differences within multiple stories, sequencing, and recognizing an author’s style. Please provide multiple examples of the author’s works; photo of author, interesting biographical information, and a variety of objects to help children identify with the author. Answer the following questions for the purpose of the paper and use them as a guide during the process with the children: a.What type of books does this author write? b.Who are the characters? Are the main characters the same or different in the books that you found/read? c.Is the setting similar in all or some of the books? If so, why do you think the author chose this particular setting? d.Does the author convey similar messages in the stories? e.Are the characters similar? Compare and contrast the main characters in 2 of the books/stories. f.What do the author’s books tell you about the author’s culture? Lesson Plans for Kindergarden:( use the Massachusetts common core standard for kindergartens ) Using the lesson plan format provided, develop and implement 4 lesson plans that reflect use of the creative arts (visual arts, music, dance, drama) as an instructional strategy across the curriculum (science, math, writing, social studies, etc) during the course of your author study. Be sure to carefully reflect on each lesson noting the benefits, challenges, goals and objectives met (or not), and things you might change if you were to implement the lesson again. Reflection on the process of author study with your class. What went well? What would you change? What knowledge and experience did you and your students gain through the process of this author study?
