Part 1: look at the world sociologically, or from the sociological perspective, using what C. W. Mill’s calls the sociological imagination. Recall that it is essentially looking at the relationships, or structures, of our lives. More closer to his words, he calls for seeing the link between the lives of individuals and larger social forces. Well, to that end, we are reading Joel Best’s little book on seeing the relationship between how those that produce knowledge or disseminate it (the media, academics, politicians, and activists), influence how we understand the social world we live in. Now, in an essay no longer than 1000 words or so (of course you can go over if you feel compelled to), do the following things: 1. Explain the point that Best is trying to make in this book. In other words, in the first paragraph of your essay, recreate his thesis. This should be only 5 or 6 sentences, so think through what Best is trying to do carefully. 2. In the following 2 or 3 paragraphs recreate two or three of his anecdotes and demonstrate that you understand how they contribute to his thesis you discussed in the first paragraph. 3. In a seperate section, I want you to find an article in a newspaper or online news service, that reports some data (be sure to provide a reference to the article). Summarize what the article is about, and what data they use. Finally, discuss what concerns we should raise with the data, given what you read in Best’s book. 4. Finally, conclude the essay with your own impression of the book and Best’s thesis. Part 2: In a seperate document, answer the following two questions: 1. Identify ONE private trouble you have experienced. 2. Now, Describe how the private trouble connects to or has been influenced by at least TWO public/societal issues” A note on how to do this. What I am looking for in this second part is a stated understanding of the link between the lives of individuals and larger social forces. So, the private trouble will be something that occurs in your life that is influenced by larger social forces, or public/societal issues.
