My name is Dija and I am submitting a letter of appeal. I did not make Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) following my semester on warning because I had personal family issue I had to take care of. My mother has been very ill for a little over 2 years now. The situation happened out of the blue. None of us in my family was expecting it and ever since it gotten really bad I had to start taking care of my mother and I had to do everything for her. I also have a baby sister so after my mother became ill I had to start taking care of her and take her to school and all of that. So with the stress of the situation it was very hard for me to focus on school. Especially how I had to work more hours so I can help my mother pay for her hospital bills since she didn’t have medicate to cover her. I was doing everything I could for her. I had very little time to focus on school. I was trying not to drop any classes and stick till the end that is why I kept getting F’s in some of the courses I was taking and that’s another reason why my GPA dropped. I should of just dropped my classes if I couldn’t do both at once but my mother didn’t want me to do that. She wanted me to keep trying to do both and I didn’t want to upset her knowing that she’s ill that is why I kept on failing some courses.
During my semester on Warning, I took many actions to help restore my academic standing. I talked to the councilors they understood my situation and they told me I should keep trying and not give up because everything will be okay and get better. I did what they suggested for me and went on to the next semester instead of taking a semester off. In the beginning I was able to manage work school and taking care of my mother but towards the end of the semester my mom took a turn around and she was getting worst again and I begin to miss some classes because I would take her to the doctor.
I would also like to address what has changed in my life that will now allow me to make SAP in future semesters. My mother recently had a surgery to remove the colon polyps which things now have gotten a lot better. Since last semester I was able to have a little bit more time to focus on my academic and get better grades. Which I did, I was able to work help my mother out with something’s and still do well in school. Ever since she had the surgery she is able to do something’s on her own which allowed me to get more time for me.
If I am placed on probation, I plan to keep doing what I been doing since last semester, and that’s to do my best! I been doing everything I can to manage between school work and taking care of my mother and little sister. It took me some time to get use to this kind of life style because it was all really overwhelming for me in the beginning. But thank God now I have the power to be a strong person and do the best I can do to help my family and myself.
Thank you for your assistance with this matter. Sincerely,
